Numinosity
This series of rock paintings follows the On the Rock pieces I did after my residency in Newfoundland. Having chosen to outline the rocks in orange, visitors to my studio at the Alton Mill Arts Centre would often comment that there seemed to be a sunset behind them. But I wasn't sure that was quite what it was. I happened to be reading a biography of C.S. Lewis at the time and came across this word, numinous. It's earliest use seems to be from Rudolf Otto's book The Idea of Holy (1923). Lewis described it as "seeming to be lit by a light from another world". I knew right away that this is what I was feeling.
